Our Mission
The Cleveland Foodbank’s mission is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to agencies that feed the hungry. The Foodbank is the cornerstone of Northeast Ohio’s hunger relief efforts, serving as the link between members of the food industry that have excess food and over 400 local hunger programs. The Foodbank is the sole nonprofit provider of food to local nonprofit hunger centers in our six-county service area, distributing nonperishable food, fresh produce, perishable and frozen foods, and prepared meals.
The Foodbank was founded in 1979 when representatives from the food service industry partnered with local charities to find an efficient way to distribute surplus food that might otherwise go to waste. In the Foodbank’s first year of operation, the organization distributed 400,000 pounds of food to 100 local hunger relief organizations. Last year, the Foodbank distributed 27,500,000 pounds of food and other essential products to over 400 member programs.
