Job Description
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Codes diseases and procedures utilizing ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 classification systems for the purpose of reimbursement, statistics, and research. Maintains data quality by accurately entering information into the hospital's computerized abstracting system.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must be able to demonstrate PC proficiency as well as mainframe and encoding computer systems

Must have knowledge of coding principles, rules and guidelines pertaining to ICD-9 classification system and inpatient reimbursement system.

Keeps informed of all current and new coding guidelines, rules, and principles
Required Length or Type of Experience
Required Licensure or Certified Registry

Must be a graduate of a Health Information Technology program certified as: RHIT, RHIA or CCS.

Must have valid certification RHIT/RHIA (Registered Health Information Technician/Administrator) or eligible or CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) with AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association)
