Job Description

Primary Function:

As the PLC & Controls Technician, supports process control by providing users of programmable logic controllers (PLC) and personal computers (PC) used for processes training/support; provides process modifications using various forms of control equipment to produce consistent quality products; assistance in maintenance troubleshooting; maintains an appropriate level of hardware and software backup to recover from failures with minimum negative effects.

Description of Responsibilities:

¨ Assists with Engineering project

¨ Provides support to maintenance where PLC’s, PC’s, or other issues regarding controls are encountered

¨ Conducts preventive maintenance on hardware/software to reduce likelihood of failures

¨ Installs and supports software /firmware updates

¨ Maintains a current status on all back-up/spare equipment/software

¨ Installs and supports hardware upgrades

¨ Conducts back-ups and records documentation in case of hardware/software failure

¨ Coordinates efforts to recover from hardware/software failure

¨ Works with employees at all levels - management, maintenance craftsmen, production operators, process engineers to achieve desired results

¨ Documents equipment/software problems and solutions to those problems for future reference

¨ Coordinates with other functional areas as required

¨ Training of PLC/PC users

¨ Maintains skill level as software/equipment changes

¨ Assists with studies to improve process efficiencies

¨ Troubleshoots process problems relating to PLC’s and PC’s

¨ Other duties as required by the position

Knowledge / Skills / Experience:

¨ Must be knowledgeable in the areas of Programmable Logic Controllers (majority are Allen-Bradley), and, Personal Computers and their use in a process control environment

¨ Associates Degree preferred in Basic Electronics/Programming, or comparable technical school training/certification

¨ 3-5 years of applicable practical experience

¨ Ability to systematically plan course of action to ensure the accomplishment of objectives.

¨ Able to work within a team environment in which members participate and cooperate to effectively promote, generate and leverage cross-team collaboration in problem solving

¨ Can work through problems with customers and maintain/improve relationships

¨ Can work with a minimum of supervision/shows initiative

¨ Must demonstrate quality process orientation with focus on continuous improvement of products, services and processes.

¨ Ability to effectively train end users - providing appropriate instruction, advice and feedback to minimize downtime and enable users to quickly achieve full productive capacity while complying with all UCAR Safety regulations

¨ Knowledge of general software copyright rules/guidelines

¨ A strong customer focus orientation is preferred

Working Conditions:

¨ Work is typically performed in a plant operations environment, requires frequent walking from department to department, some stair climbing, requires occasional carrying, maneuvering and lifting in order to complete duties of the position. Frequent hand /eye coordination is used to operate keyboard and related office/PLC/PC equipment. Position requires ability to travel occasionally to other UCAR sites or vendor locations.
