About the Federal Reserve System
Almost everyone has heard of “The Fed,” but many people don’t know exactly what the Federal Reserve System does. It’s the central bank of the United States—the “banker’s bank.” The final resting place for all those checks and dollar bills.
The Federal Reserve System is made up of the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., and 12 Federal Reserve Banks around the country. The Fed has three important functions—guiding monetary policy, supervising banks, and providing payment services to financial institutions and the public—which, together, help to ensure the health of our nation’s economy.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland serves the Fourth Federal Reserve District, comprising Ohio and parts of Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Employees work in our downtown Cleveland headquarters as well as branch offices in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.
